East Greenwich Town Council:

It’s time to properly invest in our public schools.

What does properly funding public education in East Greenwich mean?

  • Ensure students have sufficient resources to succeed in the classroom
  • Improve student-to-teacher ratios
  • Save school sports and extracurricular activities
  • Provide compensation for teachers and education support professionals that matches the state average
  • Enhance East Greenwich’s school buildings

East Greenwich public schools have reached a state of emergency.

For too long, East Greenwich has short-changed our schools, students, and educators. Since 2008, the town’s annual budget increase for our schools has plummeted, while costs have continued to rise.1 This has led to overcrowded classrooms, outdated and crumbling school buildings, fewer resources for students, proposals to cut school sports and extracurricular activities, and some of the lowest-paid teachers in the state. Now, with a looming $842,000 cut in state funding, we’ve reached a state of emergency – and we can’t let our students be the ones to suffer the consequences. Now is the time to speak out.

1. Before 2008, the town’s annual budget increase for schools averaged 7.4%. Since 2008, that number has plummeted to just 1.72%—with the last five years averaging only 2.68%.

How can we properly invest in our schools and reverse this trend?

  • The Town Council can request a waiver from the General Assembly to exceed the 4% school funding increase cap—something other RI cities and towns have taken advantage of when facing fiscal emergencies.
  • The Town Council can use a small percentage of their $10 million dollar fund balance to help make up for this year’s devastating budget gap—just as they’ve required the School Committee to do for years.
  • The General Assembly can pass legislation sponsored by Rep. Justine Caldwell and Rep. Evan Shanley that would restore roughly $500,000 in state education aid.
